Dean David H. Stull has announced the appointment of violinist David Bowlin to the faculty. He joins the Division of Strings as Assistant Professor of Violin.
Bowlin, an Oberlin alumnus, earned his Bachelor of Music degree from the Conservatory in 2000.
Winner of the first prize in violin at the 2003 Washington International Competition for Strings, Bowlin has been active internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. He has performed extensively in New York City at such premier venues as Alice Tully Hall, Weill Recital Hall, Zankel Hall, and the 92nd Street Y.
A former member of the Naumburg Award-winning Da Capo Chamber Players, Bowlin’s four-year tenure with the ensemble included extensive tours in the former Soviet Union and the U.S. He is also a founding member of the International Contemporary Ensemble, a uniquely structured collective of composers and instrumentalists that has performed throughout North America and, most recently, in Poland and Mexico. In April 2007, at Weill Recital Hall, Bowlin premiered Mahagoni, a concertofor violin and string orchestra, which was written expressly for him by Bulgarian composer Alexandra Karastoyanova-Hermentin. In 2008, Bowlin will perform in a Musicians from Marlboro tour with violist Kim Kashkashian.
Prior to joining the faculty of the Oberlin Conservatory, Bowlin was teaching assistant for Ronald Copes ’71 at the Juilliard School. Bowlin received his Master of Music degree at Juilliard in 2002, and is a doctoral candidate at State University of New York, at Stony Brook.
