Composer and Oberlin Professor of Composition Lewis J. Nielson has been awarded a 2007 Cleveland Arts Prize, which includes a cash award of $2,500, as a mid-career artist in the category of Music and Dance. The 2007 prizes were announced in May and conferred upon the recipients during a banquet held in June at the Cleveland Play House.
Nielson, who is Director of the Conservatory’s Contemporary Music Division and Chair of the Composition Department, has been described as a “master composer, an American original.” In presenting him for his award, Arts Prize juror Paul Ferguson, Director of Jazz Studies at Case Western Reserve University, noted that Nielson’s work has been described as both unconventional and engaging, challenging and sincere.
Founded in 1960, the Cleveland Arts Prize celebrates people who sustain the fine arts in the city. It is the oldest award of its kind in the United States.
