Oberlin College’s Artist Recital Series concludes its 128th season with world-renowned violinist Gil Shaham, who will be joined by several of his distinguished musical friends. The all-Brahms concert takes place on Friday, April 27, 2007, at 8 p.m. in historic Finney Chapel, located at 90 North Professor Street, across from Tappan Square in Oberlin.
The program features Johannes Brahms’ Sonata in D Minor, Op. 108, a collection of Hungarian Dances, and Sextet in B-flat Major, Op. 18. Shaham’s collaborators for the evening are pianist Akira Eguchi, violinist Adele Anthony, violists Masao Kawasaki and Dov Scheindlin, and cellists Jian Wang and Alisa Weilerstein.
Reserved seat-tickets are $10 for students, $22 for seniors and those with an Oberlin College I.D., and $26 for the general public. They may be purchased in advance by calling Oberlin's Central Ticket Service at 1-800-371-0178. Tickets purchased at the door the night of the concert are an additional $3. Finney Chapel is wheelchair accessible, and free parking is available throughout the Oberlin College campus.
Violinist Gil Shaham is internationally recognized by audiences and critics alike as one of today’s most virtuosic and engaging classical artists. “Shaham’s playing had a searing intensity,” writes Rian Evans the Guardian, “but it was the irrepressible energy he exuded that brought every note so vividly to life.”
Shaham is sought after throughout the world for concerto appearances with celebrated orchestras and conductors, as well as for recital and ensemble appearances on the great concert stages and at the most prestigious festivals. His 2006-07 season highlights include appearances with the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland and Philadelphia orchestras, National, Houston, Seattle, Atlanta, and Cincinnati symphonies, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and U.S. tours with both the Chicago Symphony and Orpheus. In addition to recital tours in Europe and Japan he appears abroad with the orchestras of Berlin, Copenhagen and Moscow, and with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra as part of their 70th Anniversary concerts.
