Oberlin’s Artist Recital Series continues with a performance by the most distinguished brass ensemble in the United States—the American Brass Quintet (ABQ)—on Sunday, November 12, 2006, at 3 p.m. The concert takes place in Finney Chapel.
The quintet—trumpeters Raymond Mase and Kevin Cobb, David Wakefield on horn, Michael Powell on trombone, and bass trombonist John Rojak—will present a program featuring ABQ editions of Renaissance masters, Cleveland native Eric Ewazen’s Colchester Fantasy, and Joan Tower’s Copperwave, a 2006 ABQ commission.
Reserved seat-tickets are $7 for students, $16 for seniors and those with an Oberlin College I.D., and $20 for the general public. They may be purchased in advance by calling Oberlin's Central Ticket Service at 1-800-371-0178. Tickets purchased at the door the night of the concert are an additional $3.
Hailed by Newsweek as “the High Priests of Brass,” and the “founding fathers of the back-to-brass movement,” the ABQ is the longest continuously performing brass quintet in North America. Currently in its 46th season, the ABQ tours nationally and internationally, and has performed in nearly every major city, concert hall, and music festival in the world. The only brass quintet to have ever been presented on PBS’ Live From Lincoln Center, the ABQ’s burgeoning discography represents the largest body of serious brass chamber music ever recorded by one ensemble.
