The 2006-07 edition of the Oberlin Jazz Septet (OJS) might be newly minted as far as ensembles go, but they are definitely ready for their close-up.

On Thursday, October 26, at 7:30 p.m., the OJS will be featured on Applause, the arts and culture program on WVIZ-ideastream (Cleveland Public Television). The members of the OJS drove to the station’s studios, located in the idea center at Playhouse Square in downtown Cleveland, and with the first few bars of Wayne Shorter’s Backstage Sally, earned a place in WVIZ history for being the first musicians to perform in the station’s new Westfield Insurance Studio Theater.

The OJS, which is directed by Professor of Jazz Studies and Double Bass Peter Dominguez, rounded out its set with Jackie McLean’s A Ballad for Doll and Dexter Gordon’s Cheesecake. After its performance, Dean of the Conservatory David H. Stull and Visiting Professor of Jazz Trumpet Marcus Belgrave joined host Dee Perry for a chat about jazz studies at Oberlin, and an update about the Phyllis Litoff Building, the future home of the jazz studies department.

In Oberlin, Applause airs on Channel 11. The program, which also features a segment on Oberlin’s Frank Lloyd Wright House, repeats Saturday, October 28, at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 29, at 1 p.m.
