Acclaimed cellist Steven Isserlis '80 joins forces with pianist Robert Levin for an all-Beethoven evening in Finney Chapel Tuesday, Dec. 14, at 8 p.m.

The concert, part of Oberlin's Artist Recital Series, features two sets of the composer's variations on The Magic Flute and two sonatas, the F Major, op. 5 and the A Major, op. 69.

Isserlis' passion for music transcends conventional divisions. Acclaimed world-wide for his musicality as well as his technique, he is equally at home drawing the audience into his circle of friends for chamber music or in recital, delving into the historical archives to emerge with a forgotten gem, or on the concert platform with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras and conductors.

When the London magazine Time Out named him Classical Artist of the Year for 2002, the editors wrote: &quo;Musicians who make acclaimed debuts in their teens aren't all that rare. The test lies in developing from whizkid to mature artist. Steven Isserlis has passed with flying colours as an internationally known cellist.&quo;

His partner for the evening, pianist Robert Levin, has given recitals, chamber concerts, and appeared as a concerto soloist throughout Europe and the United States.

Levin is unique among today's pianists in his restoration of the classical-period practice of improvised embellishments and cadenzas—his Mozart and Beethoven performances, for example, have been hailed for their mastery of the period's musical language.

Reserved-seat tickets are $10 for students, $22 for seniors, area educators, and those with an Oberlin College I.D., and $26 for the general public and are available through Oberlin's Central Ticket Service. Please call 440-775-8169 for more information.
