Award-Winning Pianist Kotaro Fukuma Performs Nov. 14

Kotaro Fukuma, first prize winner of the 2003 Cleveland International Piano Competition, appears on the Artist Recital Series Sunday, November 14, at 3 p.m. in Finney Chapel. The Tokyo-born pianist will present a program featuring Schubert's Four Impromptus (D. 899), Bartók's Outof Doors, and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition

Allan Kozinn, writing in the New York Times, says that in a November 2003 performance Fukuma "played … with a gently seductive tone, complete clarity of texture, and the kind of dynamic gradation that creates the illusion that a work is a breathing organism."

Prior to winning his Cleveland laureate at the age of 21, Fukuma took the second prize at the 2002 Helsinki International Maj Lind Piano Competition in Finland, along with a special prize for the best performance of a Finnish piece.

He has presented solo recitals throughout France and Japan, performed at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, and is currently on tour in the United States. His debut recording of works by Schumann is forthcoming on the Naxos label.

Reserved-seat tickets are $7 for students, $16 for seniors, area educators, and those with an Oberlin College I.D., and $20 for the general public and are available through Oberlin's Central Ticket Service. Please call 440-775-8169 for more information.
