The 125th anniversary season of the Artist
Recital Series ends not with a whimper but a blast when the American
Brass Quintet (ABQ) presents the final concert in the series Tuesday,
April 20, at 8 p.m. in Finney Chapel.
Audience members might wish to bring out their sunglasses for the second
half of the program, when members of the Conservatory's brass faculty
and members of the Cleveland Orchestra's brass section will join
"the high priests of brass" (Newsweek) onstage in Giovanni
Gabrieli's Venetian Canzone and Eric Ewazen's Symphony
in Brass.
The glare could be as bright as the sound.
The ABQ keeps the stage to itself for the first half, performing A Suite
of 17th-Century Dances by Thomas Simpson and William Brade in an
edition orchestrated by ABQ trumpeter Raymond Mase; Fantasia e Rondo
by Osvaldo Lacerda; and Morning Music by David Sampson.
Besides Mase, the other members of the ABQ are Kevin Cobb, also on trumpet,
David Wakefield on horn, Michael Powell on trombone, and John D. Rojak
on bass trombone.
General admission tickets for the concert are priced from $6 to $12 and
are available by calling Oberlin's Central Ticket Service box office
at (440) 775-8169.
The Artist Recital Series is sponsored by the Conservatory and by the
Friends of the Artist Recital Series. Media sponsorship this season has
been provided by WCLV-104.9
FM, WCPN-WVIZ
ideastream, and Northern
Ohio Live magazine.
