Oberlin's International Piano Competition To Be Featured on WQXR's Young Artist Showcase January 14

Excerpts from the finals round of the Conservatory's 2003 International Piano Competition will be broadcast on the McGraw-Hill Companies' Young Artists Showcase Wednesday, January 14, at 9:05 p.m. on WQXR, the classical music radio station of the New York Times. The program is also simulcast online.


Robert Sherman, host of the program, served as one of the jurors for the competition. Listeners will hear performances from the top three prizewinners and also from finalist Kei Niedra, 13, of North Ridgeville, Ohio. Niedra, a student of Associate Professor of Pianoforte Haewon Song, will play excerpts from Griffes Fantasy Pieces and Liszt's Rigoletto Paraphrase.


First-prize winner Rachel Kudo of Illinois will perform a Chopin étude and ballade and the first movement of Haydn's Sonata in C. Kevin Kordi, also of Illinois and the second-place winner, will present Mendelssohn's Song Without Words Op. 85 No. 4 and Liszt's Chasse Neige from his Transcendental Études. Korea's Ye-Jin Lee, third-prize winner, will play the first movement from Beethoven's Sonata Op. 10, No. 3 and Chopin's Étude Op. 10 No. 4.
