She
is one of the most venerated musicians of our time, and on Tuesday, Nov.
18, at 8 p.m., she will appear in concert in Finney Chapel.
Violinist Ida Haendel will perform works by Bach, Bartôk, Beethoven,
Chausson, Corelli, and Wieniawski, accompanied by pianist Walter Delahunt,
as part of Oberlin's Artist
Recital Series, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary this season.
Haendel typifies the great tradition of violin playing, evolving from
her early work with such celebrated pedagogues as Carl Flesch and Georges
Enesco. She made her London debut at the age of 8 in a Proms concert conducted
by Sir Henry Wood. Since then her career has been distinguished by a succession
of triumphs in concert halls the world over.
Critics unreservedly praise her masterful technique and searching musicality.
Richard Dyer of the Boston Globe wrote: "Fresh, youthful inspiration
still animates everything Haendel does . . . . She plays the notes with
such simplicity, directness and emotional force that they tear your heart
out."
She records primarily for the EMI, Decca, and Testament labels; her 2000
recording for Decca with pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy was awarded France's
coveted Diapason d'or.
Pianist
Walter Delahunt is in great demand as a chamber musician --he is a regular
guest of the Berlin Philharmonic Chamber Music Series and many European
chamber music festivals --and he has performed with some of the world's
greatest musicians, including Haendel, Zara Nelsova, Gidon Kremer, and
Martha Argerich. His musicianship is characterized by tremendous technical
command of the instrument and unique sound quality.
A native of Nova Scotia and a professor at the Vienna Academy of Music
from 1984 and 1997, his performing career has taken him throughout Canada,
the United States, North Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. He has recorded
for Panton (Prague) and BMG Japan. A live recording of Dvorak chamber
music, performed at the Progetto Martha Argerich in Lugano in June 2002,
is available on EMI Classics.
