Artist Recital Series Presents Mezzo-Soprano Denyce Graves Wednesday, May 7

by Marci Janas '91

USA Today calls mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves "one of the singers most likely to be an operatic superstar of the 21st century." In Finney Chapel on Wednesday, May 7, at 8 p.m., audiences can hear the expressive, rich vocalism that is the hallmark of her acclaimed title roles in Carmen and Samson and Delilah.

Oberlin College's Artist Recital Series presents the incomparable Denyce Graves - with principal accompaniment by pianist J.J. Penna - in a program of song sets by Brahms, de Falla, Dowland, Duparc, Guastavino, Handel, Purcell, Saint-Saëns, and Vitier. She will conclude the program with a series of traditional spirituals. Clarinetist Vincent Thomas will provide accompaniment for the Guastavino song set.

Graves, an alumna of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, was awarded an honorary doctor of music degree in 1998.

Tickets, which are $7 for students; $16 for those with an Oberlin College I.D., senior citizens, and educators; and $20 for the general public, can be purchased by calling Oberlin's Central Ticket Service box office at 440-775-8169. Tickets purchased at the door the evening of the performance are an additional $2. All seats are reserved.
