Yefim Bronfman
Pianist Yefim Bronfman has appeared worldwide with leading orchestras, in recitals, and in chamber music performances for over a quarter of a century. Born in Tashkent, in the Soviet Union, in 1958, he immigrated to Israel with his family in 1973. He studied at the Juilliard School of Music, the Marlboro Festival, and the Curtis Institute, and with Rudolf Firkusny, Leon Fleisher, and Rudolf Serkin. Mr. Bronfman made his international debut in 1975 with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. In 1991, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize for outstanding achievement and excellence in music.

Mr. Bronfman’s recent engagements have included appearances with the Atlanta Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, Pittsburgh Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Saint Louis Symphony, and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. He also toured the United States as soloist with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic and joined with pianist Emanuel Ax for a duo recital tour (including a performance at Severance Hall in November 2001). Abroad, Mr. Bronfman has recently appeared with the Bayerische Rundfunk, Israel Philharmonic, Santa Cecilia Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Sydney Symphony, and the Vienna Philharmonic, as well as at the BBC Proms and at the Aspen, Bad Kissingen, Ravinia, Salzburg, and Tanglewood festivals.

Mr. Bronfman has given numerous solo recitals throughout North America, Europe, and the Far East, making debuts at Carnegie Hall in 1989 and Avery Fisher Hall in 1993. A devoted chamber music performer, he has collaborated with the Cleveland, Emerson, Guarneri, and Juilliard Quartets, as well as the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He also has played chamber music with Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, Lynn Harrell, Shlomo Mintz, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Pinchas Zukerman, and many other artists.

Mr. Bronfman records exclusively for Sony Classical and won a Grammy Award in 1997 for his recording of the three Bartók Piano Concertos with Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. His discography also includes the complete Prokofiev Piano Sonatas and all five of the Prokofiev Piano Concertos, nominated for both Grammy and Gramophone magazine awards. Other recordings include Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concertos Nos. 2 and 3, and recordings with Isaac Stern of the violin-and-piano sonatas by Bartók, Brahms, and Mozart. To coincide with the release of the Fantasia 2000 film soundtrack, Mr. Bronfman was featured on his own Shostakovich album, performing the two Piano Concertos and the Piano Quintet. Sony recently released a two-piano recital compact disc with Mr. Bronfman and Emanuel Ax.

Yefim Bronfman made his Cleveland Orchestra debut in 1986, and prior to this weekend’s concerts his most recent engagement with the Orchestra was in July 2002.
