Springtime in New York for Oberlin Musicians Featured on WQXR's Young Artists Showcase

by Marci Janas '91

A mere five days after the vernal equinox, radio listeners in New York's tri-state area (and those worldwide on wqxr.com) will hear the fresh sounds of music from Oberlin when The McGraw Hill Young Artists Showcase features students from the Conservatory.

The program, set to air Wednesday, March 26, at 9 p.m., will feature Peter Evans '03 performing J.N. Hummel's Concerto in E-flat for Trumpet and Orchestra. Standing in for the orchestra, on piano, is Associate Professor of Instrumental Accompanying James Howsmon.

Evans, 21, is from Weston, Massachusetts, and studies with Associate Professor of Trumpet Roy Poper. He plans to move to either Boston or New York to pursue a career as a classical and jazz-improvisation musician. His performance was recorded in Warner Concert Hall December 8, 2002.

Also showcased will be the Oberlin Orchestra, conducted by Steven Smith, Associate Professor of Conducting and Music Director of the Oberlin Conservatory Orchestras. The ensemble's performance of Maurice Ravel's Rapsodie Espagnole, recorded in Finney Chapel on February 28, 2003, will close the program.

Young Artists Showcase is hosted by Robert Sherman. WQXR is the classical music radio station of The New York Times.
