The Dave Holland Quintet to Perform On Sunday, February 16 By Jonah Berman '03
			On Sunday, February 16, at 8 p.m. on the campus of Oberlin College, jazz lovers will be in their element -- and that element is fire. The Dave Holland Quintet, featuring Oberlin Conservatory of Music Assistant Professor of Jazz Trombone Robin Eubanks, Chris Potter on saxophone, Steve Nelson on vibes, Billy Kilson on drums, and legendary bassist Dave Holland, brings its special brand of fire to Finney Chapel. The award-winning ensemble's Oberlin appearance is sponsored by the Conservatory's jazz studies program and new music and assemblies committees. Howard Mandel, president of the Jazz Journalists Association, writes in Down Beat magazine that these "individuals with minds and styles all their own . . . bring their fires to [Holland's] projects, but tend their flames the better to burn together than to flare up and obscure each other's lights." The quintet is not here just to play, however. Also on Sunday, February 16, the group will participate in a jazz forum at 2 p.m. and, at 3 p.m., master classes featuring jazz performance majors from the Conservatory's jazz studies program. These events, which are free and open to the public, also take place in Finney Chapel. General admission tickets for the concert can be purchased at Oberlin's Central Ticket Service (440-775-8169) and on campus at the Wilder front desk. Tickets are priced at $5 for students, $8 for faculty, staff, senior citizens, alumni, and educators, and $10 for the public. Formed in 1997, the Dave Holland Quintet is coming off of an incredibly successful year, one in which their latest album, Not for Nothin, was voted jazz album of the year in the 67th annual Down Beat reader's poll. In that same poll, the quintet was also voted acoustic jazz group of the year. In an age when the focus is frequently on a superstar bandleader and sidemen are often ignored, Holland's band is an anomaly; it insists on being a group in the traditional sense, where all members serve equally important roles. Holland, a native of England, has recorded and performed with such jazz luminaries as Miles Davis, Stan Getz, Chick Corea, and Herbie Hancock. He has several recordings under his own name, and has been nominated for multiple Grammy awards. His current band has toured all over North and South America, Europe, and Asia.
