Oberlin on the Gotham Airwaves Again July 31

Oberlin's autumn in New York - at least on the airwaves - concludes Wednesday, November 6, at 9 p.m. when excerpts from the Conservatory's acclaimed production of Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer's opera Le Pouvoir de l'Amour are featured on The McGraw Hill Young Artists Showcase, broadcast on WQXR, the classical music radio station of The New York Times.

Listeners of 96.3 FM in New York's tri-state area as well as listeners of wqxr.com will also hear selections from the finals round of last summer's International Piano Competition, including first-prize winner Jung Lim Kim's performance of Franz Liszt's Après une lecture de Dante; second-prize winner Jeannette Fang playing Felix Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words, Op. 62, No. 1 and Sergei Rachmaninoff's Etudes-Tableaux, Op. 39, No. 6; and Martin Leung, third-prize winner, performing the "Tarantella" from Liszt's Venezia e Napoli, Supplément to Annés de Pélerinage, Book II.

Young Artists Showcase is hosted by Robert Sherman.

Those who want more "Oberlin and the City" will have to travel to Manhattan. Several recent Oberlin graduates and one current faculty member are on this season's program of cultural offerings at Columbia University's Miller Theatre:

  • Violinists Simin Ginatra '96 and Sibbi Bernhardsson '95 and their colleagues in the Pacifica Quartet perform the complete string quartets of Elliott Carter Saturday, November 2;
  • Assistant Professor of Composition Jeffrey Mumford's work will be showcased in a December 4 program that includes a performance by violist Wendy Richman '02;
  • Violinist Jennifer Koh '97 performs works by Steve Reich, Elliott Carter, John Zorn, Charles Wuorinen, and Ornette Coleman on December 5; and
  • Works by composer Huang Ruo '00 take the spotlight on February 8, 2003, when he conducts members of his musical brain trust, the International Contemporary Ensemble, comprised of many recent Oberlin graduates.
