Four Named Winners of 2002-03 Concerto Competition

Concerto Concert Schedule

Concerts featuring the winners of this year's Oberlin Conservatory of Music Concerto Competition will take place throughout the fall and spring semesters. All four concerts are at 8 p.m. in Finney Chapel, and all will be conducted by Steven Smith, associate professor of conducting and music director of the Oberlin orchestras.

Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002
Mark Barden '03 will perform Alfred Schnittke's Concerto for Piano and Strings with the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra. Also on the program: J.C. Bach's Sinfonia Op. 18, No. 3 for Double Orchestra, Igor Stravinsky's Danses Concertantes, and Darius Milhaud's Le Boeuf sur le toit, Op. 58. This concert will be broadcast live on WCLV, 104.9 FM.

Friday, Feb. 28, 2003
Daniela Flonta '03 will present Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 (Emperor), Op. 73 in E-flat Major with the Oberlin Orchestra. The program will also feature Witold Lutoslawski's Symphonic Variations, Claude Debussy's Nocturnes, and Maurice Ravel's Rhapsodie Espagnole.

Sunday, April 6, 2003
Elena Loskova '03 will perform George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue with the Oberlin Orchestra. Benjamin Britten's "Four Sea Interludes" from Peter Grimes and Johannes Brahms' Symphony No. 4 will round out the program.

Friday, April 25, 2003
Julia Sakharova '03 will perform Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto with the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra. Other selections to be presented include Arnold Schoenberg's Kammersymphonie No. 2, Op. 38 and Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 2, Op. 36 in D Major.
