Four Named Winners of 2002-03 Concerto Competition

Back to the main story

MARK BARDEN
Pianist and Composer

Pianist and composer Mark Barden, 21, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, studies at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College. One of four winners of the 2002 Oberlin Concerto Competition, he studies with Oberlin Professor of Pianoforte Monique Duphil, as well as with composition professors Randolph Coleman and Lewis Nielson. He has also studied piano with Steve Drury and Greg Slawson.

A proponent of new music, Barden frequently performs contemporary works in solo and chamber settings. He presented soloistic pieces by George Antheil and Aaron Copland in performances with the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble. He has also devoted considerable energy to advancing the music of other young composers through commissions, performances, and concert management.

Barden's primary scholarly interest -- as a pianist and as a composer -- is the work of Alfred Schnittke; he intends to study with the composer's closest associates in Russia, Germany, and Great Britain.

Barden's upcoming projects include a solo recital, the premiere of Lewis Nielson's Pinball Lizard with violinist J Freivogel, an all-Schnittke chamber concert, two concerts of collaborative conceptual music with electronic music composer Severiano Martinez, and the debut of a clarinet trio at the Midwest Composers' Symposium, to be held in February 2003 at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He is also working to complete a large piece for full orchestra.
