Artist Recital Series Presents
the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra Oct. 5

by Marci Janas '91

Oberlin College's Artist Recital Series presents the internationally acclaimed Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in a performance of Franz Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 73 "La Chasse"; Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto with soloist Eric Wyrick; and Elliott Carter's Symphony No. 1 on Saturday, October 5, at 8 p.m. in Finney Chapel.

Season subscriptions to the Artist Recital Series are still available and reflect a savings of nearly thirty percent over single tickets. Full-season subscribers are also entitled to one free bonus concert with each subscription purchase. Individual tickets to the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra are priced at $10 for students, $22 for those with an Oberlin College ID card and for senior citizens, and $26 for the general public. For more information, or to order tickets, please contact Oberlin's Central Ticket Service at 440-775-8169. Information is also available online.

Praised by the Chicago Tribune - "It's difficult to imagine a more sublime performance" - and recognized internationally as one of the world's great orchestras, the Orpheus Chamber Ensemble performs without a conductor; central to the distinctive personality of Orpheus is its unusual process of sharing and rotating leadership roles. For every work, the members of the orchestra determine the concertmaster and the principal players for each section.

This year marks the 30th season of concert activity spanning three continents for Orpheus, including appearances in the major cities of North America, Europe, and Asia. The centerpiece of each Orpheus season is its five-concert series at Carnegie Hall, the orchestra's official New York home.

Accompanying the critical acclaim for Orpheus's live appearances are numerous distinctions and awards, including a 2001 Grammy for Shadow Dances: Stravinsky Miniatures, a 1998 Grammy nomination for its recording of Mozart piano concertos with Richard Goode, and Musical America's 1998 Ensemble of the Year award.

The Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College sponsors the Artist Recital Series with additional support from the Friends of the Artist Recital Series. Media sponsorship for the Artist Recital Series is provided by WCLV 104.9-FM, Cleveland's classical music radio station, and WCPN 90.3-FM, Ideastream.
