MARC-ANDRÉ HAMELIN

Marc-André Hamelin is internationally renowned for his virtuosic musicality, unique talent, and refined pianism. Perhaps best known for his attention to lesser-known compositions of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, he is equally at home with the standard repertoire. Following summer 2002 festivals in Lanaudiere and Roque D'Antheron and the Busoni Festival with the City of Birmingham Orchestra, Hamelin's 2002-2003 concert season includes playing concertos in Dallas, Ottawa, and Vancouver and with the Swedish Radio Orchestra. His recital tour makes stops in Kansas City, Philadelphia, Montreal, Toronto, London, Holland, Germany, Moscow, Munich, and Vienna.

Highlights of recent seasons include the International Piano Series at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London; the Scotia Festival in Halifax; a six-recital series in Tokyo; multiple programs at London's Wigmore Hall, including Virtuoso Romantics and Exploration and Celebration; the Busoni Concerto with the Lahti Symphony, L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and the Tokyo Philharmonic; and recitals at Alice Tully Hall, the 92nd Street Y, and Miller Theater in New York.

Well established worldwide, Hamelin has given recitals in Amsterdam, Berlin, Frankfurt, New York, Paris, Vienna, Washington, D.C., and other cities, and his festival appearances include the Cervantino, Ravinia, Ruhr Piano, Singapore International Piano, and Snape Maltings festivals and the BBC Proms. He has toured with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and performed with, among others, Netherlands Radio, BBC Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, Royal Concertgebouw, and the Birmingham, Chicago, Detroit, Helsinki, Houston, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, Montreal, Ottawa, Philadelphia, Toronto, and Vancouver orchestras.

Hamelin's extensive discography with Hyperion Records includes concerti by Alkan, Bernstein, Bolcom, Henselt, Korngold, and Joseph Marx, as well as solo discs of Alkan, Catoire, Grainger, Liszt, Reger, Roslavets, Rzewski, Schumann, Villa Lobos, and the complete sonatas of both Medtner and Scriabin. He has received multiple Grammy nominations and numerous awards, including the 2000 Gramophone Instrumental Award, and is featured in the book The Composer-Pianists from Amadeus Press.
