Excerpts from violin performance major Julia Sakharovas junior recital, which she presented March 12 in Kulas Recital Hall, will be featured on The McGraw Hill Companies Young Artists Showcase, New York Citys weekly radio program broadcast on WQXR-96.3 FM. The program, which normally airs on Wednesdays, will feature Sakharova on Tuesday, July 2, at 9 p.m.; listeners outside Manhattan can tune in on the stations web site. Hosted by Robert Sherman, the program is currently in its 25th consecutive season on WQXR, the classical station of The New York Times. The pieces presented will be Sergei Prokofiev's Five Melodies and Richard Strauss' Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 18. Professor of Pianoforte Sedmara Zakarian Rutstein accompanied Sakharova on the Prokofiev; piano performance major Svetlana Smolina 03 appears on the Strauss. The next Young Artists Showcase to feature Oberlin will air Wednesday, July 31, at 9 p.m. Violinist Yang Xu 03, a concerto competition winner in 2001, performed with the Oberlin Orchestra, conducted by Paul Polivnick, on December 14, 2001. WQXR will air from that concert the first movement of Ludwig van Beethovens Concerto for Violin in D Major, Op. 61. Also featured on that program will be the final movement of Camille Saint-Saëns Symphony No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 78 (the "Organ" symphony), performed by Professor of Organ and Harpsichord David Boe with the Oberlin Orchestra, again conducted by Polivnick, during the inaugural of the Kay Africa Memorial Organ on September 28. Host Robert Sherman, who once served on the Conservatorys advisory council and has two children who graduated from Oberlin, plans more programming from Oberlin in the upcoming season. |
