Junior vocal performance major Joseph Holmes, a student of Professor of Singing Richard Miller, has won the 2002 Barbara E. Maze Award for Musical Excellence from the Handel and Haydn Society. He was presented with the award on June 8, following a recital of the Societys Vocal Apprenticeship Program (VAP) at which he performed "Una furtiva lagrima" from L'Elisir d'Amore by Gaetano Donizetti. Pianist Yukiko Ueno accompanied him. The recital and awards presentation took place at the New England Conservatory of Music. Holmes, who is from Wakefield, Massachusetts, was a member of VAP from 1998 to 1999, his senior year of high school. He was selected for the Maze Award following a January 2002 audition at the Boston Conservatory of Music, during which he performed Adelaide by Beethoven and Sailors Song by Haydn. Founded in 1815, the Handel and Haydn Society is Americas oldest continuously performing arts organization. In addition to a full concert schedule, the society provides a variety of community and educational outreach programs throughout the Greater Boston area. In 1994, the society established the VAP to provide private voice instruction and resources to area students showing special talent. The Maze Award extends the society's support with a cash award given to outstanding VAP alumni who intend to continue professional vocal instruction. The award is named in honor of the societys Governor Barbara E. Maze, who was instrumental in creating the VAP. A retired assistant dean of student affairs for Boston University, she is chair of the Handel and Haydn Societys cultural diversity committee and a member of its educational outreach committee. Maze is also the national chairperson for the Leontyne Price Vocal Arts Competition. |
