Three Conservatory students were among 24 musicians statewide to receive Tuesday Musical Club (TMC) scholarship awards this year. The TMC competition was held March 16 on the University of Akron (Ohio) campus, with musicians from 14 schools participating.

Ten musicians, including violinist Yang Xu '02 and soprano Alyson Cambridge ’02, each received $2,000 scholarship awards and will perform during TMC’s annual Scholarship Winners Recital on Sunday, May 19, at 7 p.m. in Guzzetta Hall at the University of Akron.

Pianist Kyung-Eun Na ’03 was one of ten musicians to receive a $1,000 scholarship in the March competition. The awards ranged from $2,000 to $500.

Xu, of Nanjing, China, studies with Assistant Professor of Violin Kyung-Sun Lee and Cambridge, of Arlington, Virginia, studies with Professor of Singing Daune Mahy. Na, an artist diploma student from Seoul, Korea, studies with Associate Professor of Pianoforte Haewon Song.

Steven Smith, assistant conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra, will serve as judge for the May 19 Scholarship Winners Recital and TMC will present two special prizes of $1,000 each for the best performances of the evening. The concert is free and open to the public.

Founded in 1887, the Akron-based TMC sponsors an annual scholarship competition open to student singers, pianists, and instrumentalists throughout Ohio. Since the TMC began its scholarship program in 1955, it has awarded more than 500 scholarships.
