Wheeler Professor of Singing Richard Miller received the 2002 New York Singing Teachers Association (NYSTA) Special Recognition Award for Excellence in Teaching during NYSTA's 2002 symposium, The 21st Century Voice Teachers' Core of Knowledge. The symposium, which was cosponsored by the St. Luke's Head and Neck Surgical Group, was held April 20 and 21 at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City.

Miller received his award — a crystal apple from Tiffany's — during NYSTA’s banquet, held April 20 at New York's Le Parker Meridien Hotel. The following day he presented a master class, Key Issues in the Training of Male Singers.

"We recognize Richard Miller as being a very special pedagogue in the world," says Thomas Cultice, chairman of the symposium. Ruth Falcon of the Mannes College of Music also received a Special Recognition Award for Excellence in Teaching.

NYSTA, which was founded in 1907, has honored singers each year with their American Artist Citation. This year marks the first time the association has honored educators. Photos of Miller receiving his award can be found on NYSTA’s web site by linking to the "2002 NYSTA Banquet Photo Album."
