Oberlins
Collegium Musicum, under the direction of Professor of Musicology Steven
Plank, will present a program of Tudor ceremonial music for the Latin
Rite on Sunday, April 21, at 3 p.m. in Pittsburghs Calvary
Episcopal Church. The group will also perform Friday, April 26, and
Sunday, April 28, in Oberlin's Fairchild Chapel; the Oberlin concerts
begin at 8 p.m. and are free and open to the public. Fairchild Chapel is
located at 50 West Lorain Street, in Bosworth Hall. The program for the three performances features music from the early 16th-century English repertoire, beginning with a large-scale setting of the "Salve Regina" from the Eton Choirbook by Robert Wylkynson, followed by John Sheppards "Missa Cantate" with the plainsong propers for Easter Day. The ensemble performs in Pittsburgh at the invitation of Alan Lewis '85, a former student of Plank and organist and choirmaster at Calvary Episcopal Church. The Collegium Musicum specializes in the performance of medieval, renaissance, and early baroque music. Founded in the early 1960s, the group is celebrating its 12th year under Planks direction. The 40-voice student ensemble has performed Mass and motet settings by Byrd, Tallis, Fayrfax, Monteverdi, Victoria, Lasso, Schuetz, and Palestrina. The group performs frequently at the Cleveland Museum of Art and recently presented concerts in Washington, D.C., and at Kenyon College. Steven Plank has been a member of the musicology faculty at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music since 1980. He teaches courses in medieval, renaissance, and baroque music. His scholarly interests include liturgics, Restoration theater music, and 17th-century sacred music drama, and he has written numerous articles for American and English journals. He is the author of The Way to Heavens Doore: An Introduction to Liturgical Process and Musical Style (Scarecrow Press, 1994). Besides his work as a choral conductor, Plank remains active as a performer on organ, cornetto, and baroque trumpet. |
