The Vilar Global Fellows program at NYU was unveiled in the spring of 2001. Alberto Vilar, an arts philanthropist and chairman of Amerindo Investments, pledged $23 million to establish the Vilar Global Fellows program, based at NYU. Vilar Fellows will receive full tuition, housing, and travel funds for two years.
Nicknamed the "Rhodes Scholarships in the Performing Arts," the inaugural Vilar Fellows were announced March 26 by New York University President L. Jay Oliva and Alberto Vilar, co-chairs of the program’s international selection committee. Nineteen semi-finalists were chosen the previous week; on March 25 they gathered at New York University for additional auditions. Twelve finalists were selected for a final round of auditions March 26 before members of the International Selection Committee; of these 12, the six winners were chosen.
