The Oberlin Conservatory’s Black Musicians Guild By Marci Janas ’91
			Founded in 2001, the Conservatory’s Black Musicians Guild (OCBMG) is a student-based organization the purpose of which, says copresident and founder Martha Newland ’03, is "to create a base of academic, social, musical, and cultural support and guidance for the Oberlin Conservatory’s black students." Since its inception last fall, OCBMG has brought to campus Michael Morgan ’79, music director of Oakland East Bay Symphony, and composer Anthony Kelley, professor of composition at Duke University. OCBMG hosted Oberlin Professor of African-American Music Wendell Logan in the forum: Breaking Bearers: How Logan Cultivated the Jazz Department and the guild produced a concert in conjunction with Black History Month.
