The Oberlin Orchestra

Back to the main story

The Oberlin Orchestra follows a demanding schedule of six hours of rehearsal per week and concerts every three to four weeks through which students are exposed to a cross section of orchestral literature. The Orchestra performs well-known works from the standard repertoire for orchestra as well as less familiar literature, from the baroque to the contemporary. Student soloists selected through an annual concerto competition are featured regularly, as are faculty soloists.

The Oberlin Orchestra and its counterpart, the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra, collaborate regularly with the Oberlin Opera Theater and the Conservatory’s larger choral ensembles. In recent years, guest conductors have included Robert Shaw (music director emeritus of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra), Michael Morgan ’79 (music director of the Oakland East Bay Symphony), Catherine Comet (Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra), violinist and conductor Oscar Shumsky, and composer John Williams. In October of 2000 the Orchestra traveled to Los Angeles’ Getty Center to perform under the baton of Maestro Williams.
