A
concert in memory of Kenneth Hall Woodside (1938-1999) will take place
at 8 p.m. Sunday, February 17, in Finney Chapel. Performers include friends
and family of Woodside, members of the Cleveland Orchestra, and Oberlin
Conservatory Professor of Piano Peter Takács. The program includes
the Mozart Quintet in A major, KV 581; Bartoks Contrasts; and the
Brahms Trio in E-flat major, Op.40.
Woodside graduated from Oberlin in 1959 with a degree in chemistry and
went become a teacher and researcher in the field of biochemistry. While
attending Oberlin, Woodside realized an affinity to chamber music, and
he frequently performed with violinist Laura Adams, a 1960 graduate of
the Conservatory who would later become his wife. Woodside remained an
ardent supporter of music and founded an amateur orchestra in Hershey,
Pennsylvania. He was a member and driving force in the American Recorder
Society, sang in the Florida Philharmonic Chorus, and served as an Oberlin
College admissions coordinator and recruiter.
Laura and Kenneth Woodside raised two daughters, both of whom are now
professional violinists. One of them, Beth Woodside, will play in this
weekends concert not only to preserve her fathers memory,
but also to bring awareness to the Kenneth H. Woodside Endowed Memorial
Scholarship. The scholarship helps third- and fourth-year Conservatory
students to complete their education.
