Music for 18 Musicians By Steve Reich

By Jacob Bacharach '03

On Friday, February 8 at 6:30 P.M., the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble will present its second performance of Steve Reich's 1976 piece, Music for 18 Musicians.

Music for 18 Musicians is a vast, minimalist piece, in many ways the culmination of Reich's exceptional career, and certainly a sort of summing-up of his earlier works such as Violin Phase (1967) and Four Organs (1970). Though in performance it lasts over an hour, 18 Musicians invariably feels new. A deceptively simple piece, Reich's piece is among the most important-and the most engaging-of contemporary compositions.

The Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble performs Music for 18 Musicians in Warner Concert Hall. They are accompanied by a video created by Carter McAdams, featuring sleight of hand by Paul Gallagher and images from Minimum by John Pawson, published by Phaidon Press Limited, 1998. The concert lasts approximately one hour and ten minutes, with no intermission, and it is free and open to the public.
