By Jacob Bacharach '03

The spring season of the Oberlin College Artist Recital Series begins with a performance by renowned cellist Janos Starker this Sunday, February 10 at 3:00 PM in Finney Chapel.

Acclaimed worldwide for his virtuoso playing, rich tone, and intense musical expression, Mr. Starker is known equally as a great performer and teacher. During his long career, he has recorded over 165 works on over a dozen labels. Since 1991 he has released recordings of the Dvorák Concerto, a cello version of Bartók's viola concerto, and Richard Strauss' Don Quixote. His 1998 two-CD recording of the complete unaccompanied Bach Suites for cello brought him a Grammy for Best Instrumental Soloist Performance.

As a live performer, Mr. Starker consistently garners rave reviews. The Detroit News writes simply: "Tour de force. Lesser words could not do justice to cellist Janos Starker's performance."

Janos Starker began studying cello in his native Budapest at age six and taught his first student by the age of eight. In 1958 Mr. Starker joined the faculty of the School of Music at Indiana University, Bloomington and now holds the title of Distinguished Professor. His master classes draw string players from all over the world, and he was the first Indiana University professor to be awarded the Tracy M. Sonneborn Award in recognition of his illustrious career as both an educator and a performer.

Mr. Starker's awards and accolades are too numerous to list in their entirety. He has played with some of the world's foremost ensembles and orchestras and has served as principal cellist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. His solo performances, particularly his interpretations of composers such as Schubert, Brahms, and Richard Strauss, represent some of the most delicate, colorful, and profound renderings of the Viennese masters.

Here at Oberlin, Mr. Starker will be joined by pianist Shigeo Neriki in a program featuring Beethoven's Cello Sonato No. 2 is G Minor, Op. 5; Prokofiev's Sonata in C Major, Op. 119; and Brahms' Sonata No. 2 in F Major, Op. 99. For tickets, contact the Oberlin Central Ticket Service at (440) 775-8169.

On Monday, February 11, Mr. Starker will also offer masterclasses at the Oberlin Conservatory from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM and from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM in Kulas Hall. Mr. Neriki will give a piano masterclass from 12 noon until 1:30 in Warner Concert Hall.
