The St. Petersburg String Quartet has won a Chamber Music America/WQXR Record Award for best chamber music album of 2001. The ensemble was honored for its Hyperion recording of the Shostakovich String Quartets nos. 5, 7, and 9. Only five of the 62 entries took awards, which were presented January 20, 2002, at the annual Chamber Music America conference in New York City. Any nationally distributed CD issued between September 2000 and August 2001 was eligible for the award.

Last fall the St. Petersburg Quartet also saw the release of their complete Borodin quartets on the Dorian label. They will complete their recording of the Shostakovich quartet cycle on Hyperion this June and begin recording the complete Tchaikovsky string quartets on the Dorian label in the fall.

"Recording is an added bonus," says violist Aleksey Koptev. "Performing and teaching are what really motivate us."
