Violinist Yang Xu was born in China in 1979. He studied violin under Professor
Shi-xiang Zhang and Li-na Yu at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. In
1998, he moved to the United States to further his musical education.
He is an undergraduate student at the Oberlin College Conservatory where
he has studied with Almita and Roland Vamos, and currently studies with
Kyung Sun Lee.
Starting
at the age of 13, Mr. Xu has been awarded prizes in many international
competitions including the Irving Claim String Competition in 2000, the
Henrik Szering International Competition in 2000, the Ducrest Competition
in 1999, the Yuhudi Menuhin Violin Competition in 1998, the Novosibirsk
International Violin Competition in Russia in 1995, and the Klöster
Schöntal International Violin Competition in Germany in 1993.
In 1996 Mr. Xu made his Shanghai debut at the Shanghai Arts Festival with
the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, performing the premier of the Xia Liang
Violin Concerto. The following year, he played a recital at Shanghais
Spring Music Festival. Since then, he has been widely recognized by Chinese
audiences. In 1997, he performed for Isaac Stern on the occasion of Mr.
Sterns visit to the Shanghai Conservatory. Following his prize at
the Yehudi Menuhin Violin Competition, Mr. Xu was invited to perform with
the Orchestra National de Lille in France. After that performance, Lord
Menuhin described him as a most intense and excellent violinist. In 1999,
at the Music Academy of the West festival in Santa Barbara, California,
Mr. Xu made his American debut with the festival orchestra, to critical
acclaim. In the summer of 2000, he served as concertmaster of the Pacific
Music Festival orchestra in Japan. At the Pacific Festival he played chamber
music concerts with Wener Hink, concertmaster of the Wiener Philarmoniker,
and also with other principal players of the worlds most prestigious
symphony orchestras.
Mr. Xu will perform
Mozarts Violin Concerto in A with the Minnesota Sinfonia in January
2002.
