Smithsonian Outreach String Quartet

By Joanna Chang

About the Tappan String Quartet

Each year, in co-operation with Oberlin Conservatory, the Smithsonian Institution offers a student string quartet from Oberlin the opportunity for a residency in Washington D.C. This January, during the week of the 14th—19th, Oberlin’s newly formed Tappan Quartet will participate in the project. The quartet’s members are Sunho Kim, violin; Cibran Sierra-Vazquez, violin; Thomas Beer, viola; and Sarah Biber, cello.

The quartet will present outreach programs at various D.C. public and private schools. The residency will culminate at the end of the week in a Smithsonian concert for Oberlin alumni at which the quartet will perform on the Smithsonian’s Stradivarius instruments. This performance will occur on Friday, January 18, at 7:30 P.M., at the National Museum of American History, Hall of Musical Instruments.

The director & sponsor for this project is Professor of Violin Marilyn McDonald, who is proud to say that this will be the fifth year that an outstanding Oberlin student quartet will participate in the Smithsonian Quartet project.
