vocalist Sugata Chatterjee, joined by tabla player Mustan Singh, will
perform a concert of classical vocal music of India in a free, public
concert on Thursday, December 13, at 8:00P.M.
in Warner Concert Hall. The concert is sponsored by the musicology
division's James Hall Fund for Musicology.
Born in Calcutta, Chatterjee represented India in the Boston area International
Cultural Festival in 1990, and has been a featured soloist at the 200th
anniversary of the City of Cleveland, the North American Bengali Conference,
and the North American Indians Millennium celebration. She has given performances
at Kalamandir, Calcutta, and made multiple appearances on Calcutta television.
Future engagements include performances at the Columbus India Association
and New York India Association, and the Indo-German Society at Giessen,
Germany.
Chatterjee has trained since her childhood, under the guidance of guru
Satya Ranjan. Under his tutelage, she completed Sangeet Prabhakar, conferred
by Alahabad Sangeet Parsad, in 1989. She furthered her training with Pundit
Ajoy Chakraborti and Pundit Mohanlal Mishra. Her versatile repertoire
now includes Hindustani Khyal, Bhajan, Thumri, Nazrulgeeti and Ragpradhun
genres of singing.
