at the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C.

Violist Wendy Richman will perform in recital at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C, this Sunday, November 11 at 5 P.M. Richman, a 2001 graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory, will perform with pianist William McDaniel, a senior piano major at Oberlin. The program will include works by Takemitsu, Schubert, Ligeti, and Schumann.

Richman will also give the premiere of wending, a work written for Richman by composer Jeffrey Mumford. "wending is a musical portrait and a celebration of the phenomenal and visionary talents of violist Wendy Richman," says Mumford, asssistant Professor of Composition at the Oberlin Conservatory."Much of the basic harmonic material is based on the letters in her name (i.e. wEnDy riCHmAn). The word is prevailingly rhapsodic and is in one movement," explains Mumford.

Richman’s affinity for contemporary music has led her to premiere numerous other works for solo viola and for ensembles. She recently commissioned from Mumford a duo for viola and contrabass (through the filtering dawn of spreading daybright) to be performed with Conservatory bassist Scott Dixon. While a student at Oberlin, Richman studied viola and chamber music with Peter Slowik, Jeffrey Irvine, Gregory Fulkerson, and the St. Petersburg Quartet.

McDaniel, currently pursuing a double-degree major, studies piano with Lydia Frumkin, Professor of Piano at the Oberlin Conservatory.

Richman and McDaniel will perform in the Sunday Afternoon Concert Series at the Phillips Collection, a fixture of Washington’s cultural life since 1941. Now in its 60th season, the series has long been a showcase for emerging musical talent from around the world. Previous performers include Glenn Gould, Jessye Norman, and Emmanuel Ax.
