Robin Eubanks' Performance in Tribute to Stevie Wonder
Broadcast on CBS

Get 2 It, a compact disc recording released this year by Assistant Professor of Trombone Robin Eubanks and his band Mental Images, is now featured in "Listening Room." Robin composed and arranged all but two of the tunes on the CD.

"Cross Currents," Robin’s tribute to his mentor, the late J.J. Johnson, reveals why Robin "is one of the finest jazz trombonists alive," writes Josef Woodard in JazzTimes (August 2001).

Robin, a member of the Oberlin faculty since 1998, recently returned to campus after spending three weeks touring Europe with the Dave Holland Quintet, the "core" ensemble of Holland’s Big Band. (Holland is also a member of Robin’s Mental Images, as are Robin’s brothers, trumpeter Duane and Tonight Show bandleader Kevin.)

In a Down Beat cover feature on Holland (October 2001), Robin is credited with other members of Holland’s various musical allies for having "helped raise the bar for achievements in song, mood, narrative, virtuosity, and polyphonic and polyrhythmic interplay." The Dave Holland Quintet has won the top Acoustic Jazz Group category in recent Down Beat Readers and Critics polls.
