Listen — The Oberlin Conservatory of Music Broadcasts Live Performances on WCLV

By Marci Janas '91

The inaugural concerts for the Kay Africa Memorial Organ in late September marked the first time in the 39-year history of WCLV-FM, Cleveland’s classical music station, that a live broadcast took place from Oberlin.

ISDN technology, installed in September by Verizon Wireless, made the venture possible. Live broadcasts are an important new addition to the Conservatory’s promotional operations, says David Daniels, Director of Public Relations for the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.

"This technology allows the Conservatory to broadcast its long list of talents not only over Cleveland’s airwaves, but also over airwaves on other radio stations throughout the country." With this new capability, broadcasts can—and will—emanate from Finney Chapel, Warner Concert Hall and Kulas Recital Hall.

The collaboration with WCLV does have precedent. The station produced a weekly national broadcast, "Music from Oberlin," from 1964 until the mid-1980s. And during the 1990s, Oberlin’s Office of College Relations produced "Only in Oberlin," a regular snapshot of arts and cultural events on campus that was sponsored by Kendal at Oberlin.

The next live Oberlin broadcast--a concert in Finney Chapel with the Oberlin Orchestra with conductor Paul Polivnick —takes place Friday, December 14, at 8:00 P.M. This concert will feature Shostakovich's Symphony No.11 and Beethoven's Violin Concerto, performed by Concerto Competition winner, Yang Xu. Stay tuned to the Conservatory’s web pages for news of other upcoming broadcasts from Oberlin.
