A
jazz concert showcasing the talents of such notable musicians as James
McBride (saxophonist and best-selling author); trumpet player Michael
Mossman; bassist Leon Dorsey; and pianist George Caldwell -- all graduates
of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music -- will take place Saturday, November
10 at 8:00 P.M. in Finney Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.
Also featured on the program is the Oberlin Jazz Ensemble, directed by
Wendell Logan, Professor
of African-American Music and Chair of the Jazz Studies Program. The Conservatory
has established an endowed scholarship in Logan's honor, recognizing his
remarkable accomplishments in the field of jazz studies at Oberlin, and
his commitment to the program that he has long directed.
The fund was established by two of Logan's former students, Leon Dorsey
'81, and James McBride '79, to provide an annual scholarship to an outstanding
jazz studies student who is a current or potential undergraduate in the
Conservatory.
"Endowing a scholarship is a meaningful tribute," says Marci
Alegant, Assistant Dean of the Conservatory. "When the person being
honored is a professor, it is particularly significant, and allows that
professor to continue to make a difference in the lives of students, long
after he or she retires, by providing future students the opportunity
to study at Oberlin."
