Each fall, Conservatory students compete for performance spots on the Oberlin Orchestra and Oberlin Chamber Orchestra's season schedule. For the 2001-2002 competition, five winners were selected from 17 finalists. They are: harpist Nuiko Wadden, from Wilmette, Illinois; pianist Hye Eun Suh from Seoul, South Korea; violinist Yang Xu from Nanjing, China; soprano Marcy Stonikas, from Elmhurst, Illinois; and soprano Elizabeth Dehn, from Anoka, Minnesota. The finals were held on Saturday, October 13, 2001 in Finney Chapel.

The jury for the competition represented one faculty member from each performance division, one faculty member from a non-performance division, and an outside adjudicator. This year's judges included Milan Vitek, professor of violin; Antonio Pompa-Baldi, assistant professor of piano; Gerald Crawford, professor of voice; Roland Pandolfi, professor of horn; John Knight, director of conducting and ensembles; Lewis Nielson, associate professor of composition; and John Shirley-Quirk, world-renowned bass-baritone, from the Peabody Conservatory, who served as outside adjudicator.
