The Finalists of the 2001 Oberlin International Piano Competition

Soo-Jung Ann, 13, was born in Seoul, Korea. Since starting piano at the age of five, she has won numerous awards and competitions, among them the Teenagers' Piano Competition, Samick Piano Competition, and Chosun Newspaper Music Competition. She was a prize-winner in the Moscow International Junior Chopin Competition and has been invited to perform in Warsaw by the International Chopin Foundation. She has appeared as a recitalist in the Kumho Prodigy Concert Series and as soloist with the Poland National Wieniawski Philharmonic. In 2002, she will present a concert tour in Poland with recitals and concerto appearances. She is currently studying at Ye-Won Middle School and at the Preparatory Division of the Korean National University of Arts. Her teachers include Hae-Jeon Lee and Choong-Mo Kang.

Born in Seoul, Korea, Yun-Kyung Choo, 15, began playing the piano at the age of four. She has won numerous competitions, among them the Teenagers' Piano Competition, the TBC Broadcasting Piano Competition, and the E-Wha Music Competition. She has performed in the Kumho Prodigy Concert Series and the Young Artist Music Festival in Korea. She is a student at Seoul Arts High School and at the Preparatory Division of the Korean National University of Arts. Her primary teachers are Hae-Jeon Lee and Choong-Mo Kang.

Eun Taek Kim was born in Seoul, Korea in 1987, and began studying the piano when he was five. Eun Taek has won numerous competitions, including the Eum Yeon Competition and the Kyung-won University Competition. He entered the Yea Won Middle School of the Arts Piano Division in 2000. Eun Taek won first prize at the Korean Times Korea’s Youth Competition, performed in Shanghai with Mr. Kong Shang Dong, and performed with the Kriva Chamber Orchestra. Currently, Eun Taek is studying in the pre-college division of the Seoul Art Center School with Mr. Jong Pil Lim.

A student of Hae-Jeon Lee and Choong-Mo Kang, Eun-Hye Lee, 16, started piano at the age of four. She won numerous competitions, including the Chosun Newspaper Music Competition, the Eum-Youn Piano Competition, the Han-Kook Newspaper Music Competition, the Eumak Chunchoo Music Competition and the E-wha Music Competition. She has toured in the Czech Republic with the Ceska Philharmonic and has appeared twice as recitalist in the Young Artist Music Festival in Korea. She is currently studying at the Seoul Arts High School and the Preparatory Division of the Korean National University of Arts.

Ji Yeon Shin, 15, is from South Korea and a senior piano performance major at the Yewon Art School. She started playing the piano at the age of five. In 1993 and again in 1994, she won second prize in the Korean Daily Newspaper Competition. Also in 1994, she won the Chun-Choo Piano and the Korea Monthly Magazine competitions. She was the winner of the Teenagers' Piano Competition the following year, and, in 1997, placed first in the Samik Competition and the Chun-Choo Competition. She won third place in the E-Hwa Daily Newspaper Piano Competition, and she won the Kumho Scholarship Award audition for young artists. In 1999, she performed in the Seoul Arts Center and played in the Ye-Eum Piano Festival. Last year, Ji Yeon won the Concerto Competition and performed with the Seoul Symphony Orchestra. She was also awarded a Chamber Music Scholarship and presented a concert in the Kumho Recital Hall as a member of the Yewon Quintet. This year, she won the Yewon Art School Concerto Competition and presented a concert with the Yewon Orchestra. She has played in masterclasses with Hwa-Kyung Byun and John Perry. Currently, she is studying with Seung-Hye Choi in Korea.

Mi-Hyang Yu, 15, has won first prizes in the E-Wha Music Competition, the Chosun Newspaper Music Competition and the grand prize in the Teenagers' Piano Competition. She has appeared in Kumho Prodigy Concert Series as recitalist and with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra as soloist. She is currently studying with Hae-Jeon Lee and Choong-Mo Kang at the Seoul Arts High School and the Preparatory Division of the Korean National University of Arts.

Darrett Zusko, 16, was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. He is currently studying with Ronald Turini at the University of Western Ontario. Establishing himself as a pianist throughout North America, Darrett frequently performs with orchestras in Canada and the United States, and has won numerous competitions, among them the Bartók-Kabalevsky-Prokofiev International Piano Competition. By virtue of attending several music festivals and camps, Darrett has had the opportunity to study with such renowned artists as Barry Snider, Anton Kuerti, Julian Martin, Marek Jablonski, and Paul Ostrovsky. Upon completing high school, Darrett would like to study in the United States.
