Professor of Flute Michel Debost to be Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award by National Flute Association

By Marci Janas '91

Some achievements of a few Debost students:

• Flutist and Oberlin graduate Molly Barth is a member of the acclaimed new music ensemble eighth blackbird, called "fiendishly good" by The New Yorker.

Leone Buyse, who studied with Debost in France, was acting principal flutist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra before relinquishing her performing career to teach; she is on the faculty of Rice University's Shepherd School of Music.

• A 2001 graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College, Claire Chase was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Presser Foundation to commission, perform and record new chamber music for flute. Chase used the grant to fund the commissioning of new works by four composers.

Emmanuel Pahud, another student of Debost's in France, won first prize in the prestigious Geneva International Music Competition in 1992. In North America during the 1999-2000 season, Pahud made his New York concerto and Lincoln Center debuts at the Mostly Mozart Festival. Following his New York recital debut in 1998, a New York Times reviewer wrote: "Emmanuel Pahud is the new flute sensation....he has extraordinary technique, flawless intonation, and uncanny breath control....most important, Mr. Pahud is an insightful and vital musician."
