A Little Afternoon Music: The Faculty Chamber Music Series Begins the 2001-2002 Season

By Charity Johnson

The Oberlin Conservatory of Music Faculty Chamber Series, now in its eighth year, begins the 2001-2002 concert season with works by Brahms and Mozart. The first concert in the series takes place Sunday, September 23, at 4 P.M. in Finney Chapel. All concerts in the series are free and open to the public.

Founded to highlight Conservatory faculty talent, the series schedules several performances each year.

"The faculty spends its time in teaching lessons, in rehearsals with student ensembles, in public master classes, and in performances throughout the U.S. and abroad, but we have few chances to perform together," says George Sakakeeny, associate professor of bassoon and director of the series. "Many of us look forward to performing here at home with colleagues and guests whose work we admire."

The program for the first concert will include Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Quartet in D major for Flute, Violin, Viola, and Cello KV 285, featuring Profesor of Flute Michel Debost, Professor of Violin Marilyn McDonald, Professor of Viola Peter Slowik, and Visiting Professor of Violoncello Csaba Onczay. Also on the program is Johannes Brahms’s Trio for Violin, Horn and Piano, Op. 40, featuring McDonald, Professor of Pianoforte Monique Duphil, and Professor of Horn Roland Pandolfi. Pandolfi joined Oberlin’s faculty this year after 35 years as principal horn with the St. Louis Symphony.

Concerts planned for February 17 and March 10 will feature works by Beethoven, Stephen Albert, Brahms, Bach, Stravinsky and Ned Rorem.
