Four conservatory vocalists received top honors at the 2001 Opera Guild of Dayton Annual College Vocal Scholarship Competition, held May 20 in Dayton, Ohio. Liora Grodnikaite, a senior from Vilnius, Lithuania, received first prize in the competition; Elizabeth DeShong, a junior from Fayetteville, Pennsylvania, took second prize; Alyson Cambridge, a fifth-year double degree student from Arlington, Virginia, and Michael Preacely, 01, from Chicago, Illinois, tied for third prize. Grodnikaite and Preacely are students of Wheeler Professor of Singing Richard Miller; DeShong and Cambridge study with Daune Mahy, professor of singing. The competition--sponsored by the Opera Guild of Dayton--awards more than $3,000 each year in scholarships to high school and college students studying vocal arts. The Opera Guild of Dayton was founded in 1963 to promote opera in the Greater Dayton area through fundraising, marketing and educational activities. |
