Oberlin Baroque Performance Institute Celebrates 30th Season with Lectures and Concerts

By Charity Johnson '99

The Oberlin Baroque Performance Institute (BPI) will bring together a faculty of international performers and scholars for a two-week institute titled "Handel in England," June 17-30, 2001. This summer marks the Institute's thirtieth season at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College.

The Institute will feature works composed by George Frederic Handel between 1710-1759. There also will be intensive instruction in voice, choral conducting, baroque ornamentation, and a variety of baroque instruments, in addition to master classes and private lessons, an ornamentation workshop, coached ensemble work, lectures, baroque dance classes, and concerts. Many of the events and concerts will be free and open to the public.

Other public programs include four lectures in Kulas Recital Hall at 1:30 P.M., which will be given on Monday, June 18 and 25, and Wednesday, June 20 and 27. The lectures will be delivered by Kenneth Slowik; Steven Plank, a professor of musicology at the Oberlin Conservatory; and Handel specialist Julie Muller.

Topics will include a survey of Handel's activities in England, the political, religious, and musical worlds of his oratorios, and an examination of Italian opera in England during Handel's stay in that country. In addition to these formal lectures, Kenneth Slowik will introduce the two Friday evening concerts, with a lecture beginning one half -hour before each performance. For more information on any of these events, contact Anna Hoffmann at (440) 775-8044.
