The St. Petersburg Quartet, the Conservatory's quartet-in-residence, will offer an informal recital Thursday, May 17, at 4 PM in Warner Concert Hall. Joining them will be two student ensembles under their tutelage: the Erato Quartet, winner of this year's Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition, and the Massanetto Quartet. The program features The St. Petersburg -- violinists Alla Aranovskaya and Iliya Teplyakov, violist Alexey Koptev, and cellist Leonid Shukaev, performing two octets with their young protégés. With the Erato Quartet, they will present Felix Mendelssohn's String Octet in E-flat Major, Opus 20. With the Massanetto Quartet, they will perform Dmitri Shostakovich's Two Pieces for String Octet. "It was Alla's idea that we all play together," says cellist Jonathan Dexter, a member of the Massanetto Quartet. "They are incredible teachers, and to perform with them is an incredible opportunity." Dexter, a junior from Burnsville, Minnesota, studies with Professor of Violoncello Peter Rejto.
The program also includes the Erato Quartet performing Josef Haydn's "Emperor" String Quartet in C-major, and the Massanetto Quartet performing Claude Debussy's String Quartet in G-minor, Opus 10.
