The Oberlin College Community Winds, conducted by John Knight, will present a free, public concert featuring guest soloist James DeSano, a member of the Oberlin Conservatory faculty, and principal trombonist with the Cleveland Orchestra, on Thursday, May 10, at 8 p.m. in Finney Chapel.

The program includes Percy Grainger's Lincolnshire Posy, Gustav Holst's Suite No. 2 in F major, Robert Russell Bennett's Suite of Old American Dances, featuring student conductor John Blickwedehl '01, Finale from Vasil Kalinnikov's Symphony No. 1, transcribed for symphonic band by Glenn Bainum, and Arthur Pryor's Fantasy on 'Blue Bells of Scotland' featuring James DeSano as trombone soloist.

This is DeSano's first appearance with the 75-member ensemble.
Knight, professor of music education and director of the conducting and ensembles division, founded the group in 1992 -- it includes students from the Conservatory and the College, as well as members of the Oberlin community and surrounding areas.

This spring's program is greatly varied. "The Grainger and Holst works are based upon folksongs from England," says Knight. "They are filled with full, rich, elegant harmonies and melodies. The Kalinnikov Symphony is an inspired work, and also nationalistic in style. It is melodious and beautifully written -- it's generally considered to be his most popular work."

There's also a bit of American flair on the concert.

"Robert Russell Bennett composed Suite of Old American Dances in 1950 specifically for band, and sought to create the mood of a Saturday night barn dance -- with all the gaiety -- recalling several dances from his childhood."
