The Refugee Assistance/ Newcomer Youth Project

: The Refugee Assistance Program provides comprehensive services throughout Western Washington to help refugees achieve self-sufficiency. The program offers resettlement assistance, English as a Second Language, employment assistance, youth programs and U.S. Citizenship services. During the last year, the Refugee Assistance Program has assisted refugees from more than 30 countries including Congo, Kosovo, Russia, Ukraine, Iraq, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Togo, Burma and Vietnam.

Newcomer Youth Project provides assistance to refugee youth in adapting to life in the United States. In addition to the typical struggles of adolescence and living in culturally and economically diverse areas, refugee youth also face increased responsibilities within their families and trauma caused by war and conflict. Refugee youth are the quintessential new kids in school who must simultaneously assimilate into a new school and neighborhood, learn a new language, and grieve the loss of their homeland. The International Youth Group brings refugee and local youth together to develop leadership skills, share common concerns and ideas, build friendships, gain an appreciation of different cultures and just have fun. The youth mentoring component matches recently-arrived refugee youth with adult mentors to provide academic and social support during their transition to life in the United States.
