They'll take Manhattan. And New Haven. And Baltimore.

Professor of Violin Gregory Fulkerson and the Oberlin Percussion Group [OPG] embark later this month on a whirlwind tour that includes a concert at New York City's Merkin Hall.

The OPG--known for premiering and performing new percussion works--is conducted by Professor of Percussion Michael Rosen, who founded the ensemble in 1972.

Fulkerson also has long been active in commissioning, performing and recording works by prominent American composers. All works on the Merkin Hall concert--which takes place Monday, March 26, at 8 p.m.--were either written for or commissioned by him, and all but one will receive New York premieres.

A piece by Oberlin alumnus David Schober '96, Empty Shells, will be presented on the Merkin program, which also includes Richard Wernick's Sonata for Violin and Piano, Donald Erb's Sonata for Solo Violin and Stacy Garrop's Neurotichotomy. The OPG joins Fulkerson for the grand finale--the original version of Michael Daugherty's 1986 Lex, written expressly for Fulkerson.

Pianist Charles Abramovic will accompany Fulkerson on the Merkin program.

The tour also has the OPG--joined by Fulkerson--performing at these venues:

  • Yale University's Sprague Hall, Sunday, March 25 at 4 p.m.
  • Peabody Conservatory of Music, Tuesday, March 27 at 8 p.m.
  • Manhattan School of Music, Thursday, March 29 at 8 p.m.

For these concerts, Rosen will lead the OPG in a program of works by contemporary composers François Rose, Mary Ellen Childs, Walter Ross, Peter Child and William Hubbel. Once again, Daugherty's Lex will feature Fulkerson on violin.

Local audiences will have an opportunity to hear the program to be presented at Yale, Peabody and the Manhattan School of Music when the OPG performs a free, public concert, at Warner Concert Hall, Thursday, March 22, at 8 p.m.
