Tom Lopez, Assistant Professor of Computer Music and Digital Arts, will
present a lecture on the relationship of sound to image time-based art
at the Cleveland Institute of Art on April 4th at 7:30 p.m. In his work,
Lopez explores the ability of sound to complement moving images. "The
pairing of sound and image is ubiquitous," he says. "Even though
sounds often are presented without images, moving images without sound
rarely exist. Sound can stand on its own and fill a room because it is
three-dimensional. Film and video are typically projected onto two-dimensional
surfaces need sound to complete them. Even silent films were accompanied
with live music at theaters," says Lopez. This observation leads
to the conclusion that "sound is especially unique to humans, probably
because of the physicality of soundwaves that actually move our bodies
in a way images dont."
