Only seven years separate the composition of Franz Schreker’s Chamber Symphony (1916) and Igor Stravinsky’s Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments (1923). The styles of these two works could not be more different, says Philip Highfill, guest conductor of the Finney Ensemble. "One is opulently textured, emotionally charged late Romanticism -- the other jazzy, angular, neo-Baroque clarity."

The Finney Ensemble, joined by guest pianist Associate Professor of Piano Haewon Song, will perform these two works Friday, March 9, at 8 p.m. in Finney Chapel. The concert is free and open to the public.

Highfill describes the single-movementI in the concert’s program notes as "paying homage to traditional sonata form while at the same time radically stretching its bounds." Stravinsky himself played piano in many performances of the program’s second work, described by Highfill as "demonstrating at every turn Stravinsky’s skill at crafting a vital, sophisticated, organically coherent structure."

The Finney Ensemble, founded last year, is conducted by Associate Professor of Wind Conducting Timothy Weiss and includes 44 student members.
